An orange sun slides up through dark treetops as the owl glides home at nights end A morning star sinks into the west and the silence of the dawn slowly fades The silver flash of a hungry fish breaks the smooth water mirror with a splash And songbirds fill the sweet morning air their soulful melodies to greet the light Muskoka morning has begun to dance with the rising sun Through the hills hear the distant roar of trucks as tradesmen hurry off to begin their day and the laughter and the shouts of kids waiting for that yellow bus They hope they still have time to run and play Muskoka morning has begun to dance with the rising sun

Oh I was born in Bracebridge town It wasn't very tall but it was big around ‘cause in the countryside's where us children went to play & I loved Tarzan & Elvis Presley, Sal Mineo & Ben Casey It was me & Jimmy Dean at the matinee on Saturday We wanted Swing Blue Jazz & Razzamatazz from rags to hollers, reels & rockers our feet were stompin’ time to any rhythm or rhyme It was me & mom and daddyo brother & sister and a dog named Joe we had grammas & grampas & uncles & aunts & cousins We were a tight little family moulded out of clay living our lives in that small town way tuned to the radio to hear it play It was playing Swing Blue Jazz for this small town lass who would listen to the muse and never refuse A song with a good chorus to dance and play and sing

You don't have to go to church to be in God's eye The people you love can make you laugh, can make you cry You can stand up for yourself but know when to sit down The sparkle in Mamas eyes can turn your life around You can live close together but still be worlds apart Only someone you truly love can really break your heart Every cloud has a silver lining and to your own self be true Memories live forever and forever is in you I learned it all here where the love flows free where treasured things are hard work and family I learned it all here in this small little town where roots grow deep I learned it all here It's a small little place in a world so big You drive by too fast, you miss the whole darn thing But life here's what you make it Live it small or live it large Travel out and come back or stay in your own back yard You can't pick your family so careful how you choose your friends allegiances like that will last till the world ends And Mama's always right here even though she may be gone and she's listening and smiling every time I sing my song I learned it all here where the love flows free where treasured things are hard work and family I learned it all here in this small little town where roots grow deep I learned it all here

April 2013 04:40
All along the shore the water overflowed In April 2013 the likes of this we never had seen Out there on the lawn the ducks and geese were swimming all around And pumps running night and day couldn't take the water away The temperature rose and the snow melted down and the rain began to fall It rained and it rained both day and night putting sandbags on the land didn't make it right All along the shore the river overflowed In April 2013 the likes of this we never had seen Folks who lived on lower lands had to hurry to evacuate their homes The river currant was too fast and too strong, it took out docks and picnic tables off of lawns As the white water current cut the river banks the trees couldn't stand up anymore and they fell The land underneath was swept away like it was never even there before All along the shores the lakes and rivers overflowed In April 2013 the likes of this we never had seen. In April 2013 the likes of this we hope we never again see

I Understand 04:26
There was a bear out by our fence when someone said that you would soon be moving on Well it's just common sense - you'd have to be crazy to stick around I went in with eyes wide open bright shining as a lamb Though words were never spoken, I understand The hide was on the line When we got the news that you were really doing well And if I listen very still, I'm sure that I can hear the music of your soul Like a star shining in the frozen night I am blinded by the beauty of your light Though the tides have turned us away you know I understand Now that bear out by our fence has kept us warm these long many winter nights And though the seasons fly and our paths are becoming ever wide Still I know the diamond in your eyes like the star shining in the frozen night And though the tides have turned us away you know I understand I understand

Oh sweet wild bird I want to fly away with you in the cool mists of morning till the still twilight clear We share the same space & time let's share the same secrets and the pain that surrounds us will be washed by the wind It was up at the mouth of the Muskoka river in the Springtime waters my love and I did glide We went up to the waterfall & down through the canyon We were the kingfisher & the raven, our colored wings across the sky You were born in Montreal but you are so very Irish Your eyes are growing dim with that tight pocket light But you were born in my heart so bless the Quebecois &the Irish You're a rovin’ gypsy dancer in the fields of my mind Oh sweet wild bird I want to fly away with you in the cool mists of morning till the still twilight clear We share the same space & time let's share the same secrets & the pain that surrounds us, & the shame that blinds us Will be washed by the wind

They prayed they'd find that same place on the shore that granite cove they'd landed safely at before Their horses with the sleigh had fallen through the ice Their tragic cries of death in the near twilight They ran fast with fear - no one else was near Would the ice give way putting an end to their days? Or would they make it to the shore? That same place on the shore At least they still had their little haversacks with what they'd need to survive packed high on their backs But their boots were thin & their feet so cold and wet She had a baby in arms and two little ones in her tracks Running to get to shore or be no more Reach those snow covered rocks, get there fast at all cost To that same place on the shore That same place on the shore The dusk was settling in far too soon The time of month was the dark side of the moon The little ones were starting to lag far behind The distant shore looked like a jagged black line They must soldier on, before all hope was gone And they would survive if they could cling for their lives To that same place on the shore That same place on the shore Or would they sink for evermore Reach out their little hands and cling to the land That same place on the shore

Firelight, warm and bright sending golden sparks in the black velvet sky ‘Neath the silver stars Dance and collide Cherry wood, maple, birch and pine smoke unfurls its fragrance to the creatures nearby The lovely living tree dances with earth collides with the stars Ashes to earth re-birth Firelight filling the night Dance & Collide

Land of the silver birch, home of the beaver Where still the mighty moose wanders at will Blue lake & rocky shore, I will return once more (Refrain) Down in the forest, deep in the lowlands My heart cries out for thee, hills of the North Blue lake & rocky shore, I will return once more (Refrain) High on a rocky ledge, I'll build my wigwam Close by the water’s edge, silent and still Blue lake & rocky shore, I will return once more (Refrain) Swift as the silver fish, canoe of birch bark The mighty waterways carry me forth Blue lake & rocky shore, I will return once more (Refrain) Though I am forced to flee far from my homeland I will return to thee, hills of the North Blue lake & rocky shore, I will return once more (Refrain) My paddle’s keen and bright, flashing with silver Follow the wild goose flight - dip dip and swing Dip dip and swing it back, swift as the wild goose flight (Refrain)

Lichens of green and grey on every side And green and grey beneath our feet Above our heads the canvas stretching wide And over all, enchantment rare and sweet Fair Rosseau slumbers in an atmosphere That kisses her to passionless soft dreams Oh! Joy of living we have found thee here And life lacks nothing, so complete it seems The velvet air, stirred by some elfin wings Comes swinging up the waters and then stills its voice so low That floating by, it sings like distant harps among the distant hills Across the rugged islands lie, fir-crowned and grim And further in the view Some shadows seeming swung ‘twixt cloud and sky Are countless shores, a symphony of blue Some northern sorceress, when day is done Hovers where cliffs uplift their gaunt grey steeps Bewitching to vermillion Rosseau's sun That in a liquid mass of rubies sleeps The scent of burning leaves, the camp-fire's blaze The great logs crackling in the brilliant flame The groups grotesque on which the firelight plays Are pictures which Muskoka twilights frame And Night, star-crested, wanders up the mere With opiates for idleness to quaff And while she ministers Far off I hear the owl's uncanny cry, the wild loon's laugh

In the District of Muskoka, back in 1925 On the hull of the old Nipissing, I was given a new life Our last big steam boat to be set afloat And the last one to survive With a vast and glorious history to become Muskoka's pride And when you see me sailing across the sparkling water so blue with my white flag of steam above me you will say "that's quite a view!” With my coal fired engines chugging on a course that's straight and true I'm a lady well worth knowing And I will sound my horn for you. The Ojibway word for Springtime Is the name they gave to me They call me the Segwun of Muskoka's history You can board me in the moonlight Or on a sultry summers day Feel at home to explore my polished decks And give your dreams a place to play From my windy bow to my churning wake I'm the grandest lady of the lakes So lets' sail on together you and I And from my coal fired boilers I will blow my horn And the echoes of its glory will be heard for miles around I will ring my bell and I will gladly sail for as long As I can for you people of the land The Ojibway word for Springtime Is the name they gave to me. They call me the Segwun of Muskoka's history

Moon River 05:26
Moon River, wider than a mile I'm crossing you in style someday Old dream maker, you heart breaker wherever you're goin', I'm goin' your way Two drifters, off to see the world There's such a lot of world to see We're after the same rainbows end, waitin' round the bend My Huckleberry friend, Moon River and me

about

“Muskoka morning has begun to dance with the rising sun.”
These words are the chorus of the title song for Alison Boyer's new album, Muskoka Morning. Fourteen tracks consist of Alison's original work and four of the songs are by songwriters whose lyrics pertain to the main theme of this album: Muskoka. Some of Alison's songs speak of her pioneer ancestry while others talk of more current subjects. The overall musicality is captivating.
This project has been a solid five year undertaking with Alison producing all the music, singing and performing on various instruments. A few other musicians, namely Bronwyn Boyer, Imre de Jonge, Paisley Jura, and Robert Olafson have cameo performances throughout the album. The majority of the album was recorded at drummer/percussionist Richard Jackson's studio. Richard's playing (as well as his fine engineering work), is a predominant feature on most of the songs.
The flavour of the album is an appealing mix of folk, jazz, and blues, with some other surprises included. Alison's popular harmonica style weaves its distinctive quality through the songs and her vocal harmony arrangements are beautiful. She also performs on piano, keyboards, various guitars, bass and percussion.
As well as the music, Alison has written liner notes in a book form to take the listener through an historic and geographic excursion through the District of Muskoka.
The artwork for the cover shows a beautiful painting by lifetime summer resident Gail Read. Bronwyn Boyer has done a fine job of designing the CD jacket.
Muskoka Morning will be a great addition to music collectors of all ages, and for anyone seeking a truly authentic Muskoka audio experience.

Alison's notes:

I hope you enjoy this musical tribute to my homeland. Richard Jackson has been a huge part of this project. I began producing this record at home. While that can be fun, it’s also challenging to be musician and engineer at the same time. Richard has been so much fun to work with. I was so happy to find someone who didn't want to produce my work and who would let me express my musical ideas in a kind and encouraging way. He did a fine job on mixing and mastering too. Thank you Richard!

My daughter Bronwyn Boyer has been a big help by adding violin and vocals in several tracks and also putting her artistic abilities to the graphic layout and design. The front cover is from a painting by a friend and wonderful artist, Gail Read.
